Our History
About Hastings Marine Construction
Hastings Marine Construction was founded by Bart Hastings in 1980. Bart started the company after serving 8 years in the United States Coast Guard, where he mastered the art of marine construction. Over several years, Bart grew Hastings Marine Construction from a one-man operation to Delmarva’s leading marine contractor.
Early Days
While serving the in United States Coast Guard, Bart Hastings began working part time with a marine construction company rebuilding the Indian River Coast Guard Station. Here, Bart first found a passion for the industry. After several years, Bart began working with a fellow Coast Guardsman who had recently founded his own marine construction company. Together, they built countless bulkheads and dock in the Delaware Coastal area as it was experiencing a period of rapid growth.
Our Beginning
After working in the industry for many years, Bart returned home to the Seaford area and founded Hastings Marine Construction in 1980. During the early days, Bart worked by himself building docks and bulkheads along the Nanticoke River. His early successes allowed him to grow Hastings Marine Construction as a premier marine contractor. During this time, Bart and his wife Debby, had 3 children.
Expansion
In 1996, Bart worked closely with DNREC in testing and developing new methods of shoreline stabilization and erosion control as suitable alternatives to bulkheading and rip-rap. Bart’s passion for biology and enthusiasm for environmental protection helped set the standard for living shoreline projects in Delaware. Today, Hastings Marine Construction remains at the forefront of natural living shorelines through innovative and proprietary methods.
A Family Tradition
In 2006, Hastings Marine Construction was further expanded with Bart’s sons, Ben and Luke joining the business fulltime. Ben and Luke grew up in the business and worked their way from jobsite helpers to crew leaders. Ben’s strong work ethic and passion for construction allowed him to excel as a construction manager and project lead. Luke’s keen sense for innovation, efficiency, and technology has helped expand Hastings Marine Construction into a cutting-edge contractor while maintaining the core values of quality, craftsmanship, and customer service.
Building a Legacy
Hastings Marine Construction continues to carry forward the traditions of quality and craftsmanship while continuing to expand and innovate. Bart, Ben, and Luke have always maintained a strong dedication to their community and have actively promoted various charity events, fundraisers, and community outreach initiatives. Bart, as a proud veteran, strongly supports local veteran organizations, Ben proudly serves the community as a Seaford Volunteer Firefighter, and Luke works to promote and support local youth organizations and groups.
